Abstract:

Magnetic resonance is an extremely versatile spectroscopic technique with applications in a vast range of field in science and technology. However, it is also a relatively insensitive technique. In many cases, the sensitivity can be increased by many orders of magnitude by exchanging angular momentum between nuclear and electronic spins and photons. In specific cases, this allows one to reach the limiting case of performing experiments with single electronic or nuclear spins. In other cases, the sensitivity gain allows one to detect signal from very small samples with dimensions in the µm or nm range. The seminar will highlight the basic principles of these techniques and show a number of applications to different types of samples.
