Dark Energy of the Universe: Science Club Lecture Series talk by Prof. Probir Roy  Feb 18, 2015

Science Club of IISER Pune presents the fourth talk in the lecture series:

Title: Dark energy of the universe

Speaker: Dr. Probir Roy, INSA Senior Scientist, Bose Institute, Kolkata

Date & Time: Wed, Feb 18, 2015; 04:30 PM

Venue: LHC 103

Abstract

It has now been conclusively proved from various observations - and specifically by studying very distant type 1a supernovae - that we live in an accelerating Universe. The galaxies are receding from one another, not with deceleration as suggested by simple intuition as well as predicted by the original form of the General Theory of Relativity, but with an outward acceleration. Dark Energy is the presumed source of this acceleration and is known at present to constitute nearly 73% of the energy budget of the Universe. An introductory and semi-popular account will be given of the discovery, present status and implication of this phenomenon.

About the Speaker
Dr. Probir Roy is INSA Senior Scientist at Bose Institute, Kolkata. After completing his Ph.D., at Stanford, he held various professional positions at prestigious institutes like TIFR, SLAC and CERN. He has been awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, presented by Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi “for significant contribution to Theoretical High Energy Physics” amongst several other awards. His current research interests include Neutrinos: masses, mixing patterns and oscillations Supersymmetry and supergravity, phenomenology, Beyond Standard Model Physics.
