Giving to IISER

1. Why giving matters?

The role of private support in the basic sciences

IISER Pune aims to be a leader in excellence in education and research. To achieve this, it is essential to supplement Government support with grants and private funding. All contributions, small or large, help us on our path to achieving excellence.

A gift to IISER Pune can be targetted or non-specific. Non-specific funds support our existing academic programmes, new and emerging research programmes, and reward socially relevant programmes (like drug-delivery research or clean energy research).

Targeted giving involves a choice by the donor regarding the focus of their donation. The available range of support opportunities includes: Endowed Faculty Chairs, Research Support for the programme of a specific faculty member, Travel Support for faculty/student to participate in or conduct research, and Research Support for one of the Centres of Excellence within IISER Pune.

All contributions to IISER Pune are eligible for tax deduction under clause (ii), subsection (1) of section 35 of the Income Tax Act, 1961 to be read with Rules 5C and 5E of Income-tax Rules, 1962 as follows:
175% for the year 2016-17 (Assessment year 2017-18);
150% for the year 2017-18 to 2019-20 (Assessment year 2018-19 to 2020-21) and
100% from the year 2020-21 onward (Assessment year 2021-22 onward), of contributions made to IISER Pune

2. What can I support?

IISER Pune has a wonderful mixture of talent, academic freedom, a variety of research and teaching resources, and good governance. IISER is unique in having a flexible, borderless curriculum aimed at producing world-class research and creating the next generation of scientists.

The programmes that will benefit greatly from donations include:

Faculty, research and endowed chairs
Endowed Chairs enable IISER Pune to attract scholars in demand around the world. Endowed Chairs will help IISER build expertise and leadership in broad areas. Donors may establish Chairs in their own names or in the names of others they wish to honour.

Research Support for an individual's research programme
If you find the research aims of a particular faculty member exciting or relevant we welcome you to contribute to that particular research programme. For instance, you may find the drug delivery research programme of one of our faculty fascinating. This programme is particularly relevant to a country like India with prohibitively expensive medicines being a major issue. An endowment can be used to provide the chosen faculty member a research grant so that they are free from having to write for funds and are able to entirely focus on their research.

Travel Support to Faculty and Students
Many Government grants do not have the provisions for faculty members to travel abroad. Thus, private donations are ideal for use in travel support for faculty members participating in international conferences.

Research support for a Centre of Excellence
IISER Pune has hosted many centres of excellence focussing of a variety of research topics. Many of these have established themselves internationally, as evinced by the wide range of scientific visitors they attract. We plan to establish similar centres in future as well, for emergent areas of scientific enquiry. We welcome donations, small and large, that support the research goals of these centres.

Infrastructure development
The IISER Pune campus with its research facilities, on-campus living and recreational activities offers the kind of ambience that many organizations aspire to achieve in order to give their members an inspiring environment to work at. Keeping up this level of internal engagement requires that both research and living infrastructure of the institute continue to evolve, getting better at each passing stage.
