Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Data Sciences (CAIDS)

Vision: Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (CAIDS) will focus on a three-tiered strategy of Education, Research, and Innovation (E-R-I Strategy) in developing capacity in AI and Data Science. While borrowing freely from the recommendations of the NITI Ayog paper National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence #AIforAll to align with the larger national agenda, the emphasis is on  scaling up the core strengths of IISER Pune in basic sciences towards research and innovation in AI and Data Sciences.

About: As research across the sciences, mathematics and engineering start tackling increasingly complex problems, it requires processing of vast quantities of information. In conjunction with the computational power, it is possible to make intelligent decisions based on the data. The growth of artificial intelligence and data science as disciplines has been rapid in the last decade. It is becoming clear that a wide gamut of traditional scientific research stands to benefit from advances in these areas. Hence, IISER Pune would engage in education, research, and innovation in the areas of data science and aritificial intelligence.

The proposed Centre will be set up in a new building and equipped with state-of-the-art computing facilities. The Centre will be organised around a core group of faculty members from IISER Pune, who are interested in participating in the development and activity of the Centre. The Centre will draw on the rich culture of research and education at the Institute to conduct Thematic Programmes, built around the core faculty interests, and later extended to include othertopics of contemporary attention.

The Centre has begun offer academic opportunities, from post-doctoral to faculty level, for scientists with AI and DS specialisation. In addition, degree programmes centred on AI-DS will soon be offered to IISER Pune students, and outreach programmes will be run for students outside IISER Pune. An important goal of the Centre will be to attract engage with industry on applications flowing out of research work done here.

Importantly, IISER Pune would employ a collaborative (private, government and IISER) funding model to establish this Centre, as it initiates the "first phase" of its programmes.

The computing facility and IT infrastructure at IISER Pune caters to the requirements of CAIDS.
