After forays through physics and English literature, my real academic life began in theoretical linguistics at MIT, with these research interests:
Primary: Linguistic theory; phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics.
Secondary: Structure of South Asian languages (particularly Malayalam); second language systems.
About twenty years ago, my work began delving into the foundations of linguistic theory and the nature of linguistic inquiry, and from there, broadened into the nature of scientific inquiry, and then to the nature of academic knowledge and inquiry against the backdrop of human beliefs in general. Following from thinking along these paths, my current preoccupation is located within the epistemology of scientific inquiry, comparative epistemology of academic disciplines, critical thinking and understanding, and education. An example of work resulting from these interests is available in the open source web course on Academic Knowledge and Inquiry (http://wiki.nus.edu.sg/display/aki/).
