Knots in other 3-manifolds

By Dr. Shane D'Mello

Abstract

Classical knot theory deals with knots in R^3 or S^3.  While that is the simplest ambient space, one can also consider knots in other 3-manifolds.  In some cases, such as algebraic knots, certain 3-manifolds form a more suitable ambient space than R^3 or S^3. We will also discuss the counterparts of classical knot theory that can be studied for knots in other 3-manifolds.
