Prof Jayant B.
Udgaonkar has assumed office as the Director of IISER Pune effective
November 1, 2017. A biophysicist with over 30 years of research experience, Prof
Udgaonkar was at the National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bengaluru, prior to joining IISER Pune. In addition to leading a research group working on protein folding, he has served as the Dean of Faculty and has led the administration and technical teams of NCBS.

Udgaonkar's research contributions have been widely recognized through the numerous awards and honors he has received including the B.M. Birla Award in Biology and G.N. Ramachandran Gold Medal by CSIR. Several students have so far graduated through his mentorship.
Prof Udgaonkar succeeds Prof K.N. Ganesh, who led IISER Pune since its inception in 2006. Prof Ganesh will now take on his new role as the Director of IISER Tirupati. He will maintain a research lab at IISER Pune where he will continue to work on the chemistry of nucleic acids with his team of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
