This page describes Masters programmes launched in 2022-23 (in three streams: Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics) and in 2024-25 (in Quantum Technology).

Masters' Programme (MS) in Quantum Technology

Quantum science and technology are among the fastest-evolving fields in modern science and engineering. Quantum technologies harness the properties identified by quantum physics to deliver groundbreaking capabilities in computing, communications, and sensing, far surpassing existing architectures. As these fields evolve rapidly, there is a growing demand for skilled professionals who can navigate and contribute to this dynamic landscape.

The new two-year Master of Science (MS) programme at IISER Pune is launching from the 2024-25 Academic Year to address this need. Another aim of the programme is to help build a skilled workforce for the country given the recent launch of the National Quantum Mission (NQM). It is aimed at highly motivated students with a bachelor's degrees (in science or engineering), who are interested in learning both the basics and applications of Quantum Technology.

The MS programme is designed with an emphasis on ‘skilling’ with two brand new labs (called Q-labs) being created exclusively for this programme. In addition, the course includes a rigorous project component that runs in parallel with courses in the second year and industry involvement in various forms.

The MS in Quantum Technology is designed to provide the student with a comprehensive understanding of the principles, advancements, and real-world applications in cutting-edge quantum computing and communication, quantum sensing and metrology, and quantum materials and devices. Embarking on this journey into the realm of quantum technologies will enhance the student’s academic and professional credentials, enabling them to contribute to groundbreaking developments shaping the future. The physics department is excited about guiding the first batch of ‘quantum technologists’ through this exciting and challenging field, to become a part of the second quantum revolution.

IISER Pune offers its students modern research laboratories, computational facilities and access to electronic study resources as well as comfortable housing for students. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a broad range of seminars, meetings and workshops, giving them a chance to interact with domain experts from within the country and abroad.

Masters' Programmes in Chemistry, Geology, and Mathematics

The two-year Master of Science (MSc) programme at IISER Pune is a new programme, launched in the Academic year 2022-2023. It is aimed at highly motivated students with a bachelor's degree in any branch of science, who are interested in an intense in-depth enquiry in specialized areas of research and education, as available in different Departments in IISER Pune.

The programme is distinct from the successful IISER Pune Integrated 5-year BS-MS and 6-year Integrated PhD programme, by offering a Master’s degree in a short period of 2 years. The MSc programme has an increased emphasis on course-work with research experience gained through short semester credit projects, summer training and a major research project in the second year.

IISER Pune offers its students modern research laboratories, computational facilities and access to electronic study resources as well as comfortable housing for students. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a broad range of seminars, meetings and workshops, giving them a chance to interact with people from other research organisations within the country and abroad.

Course Overview

Each Department offering the MSc programme has designed a blend of coursework and research projects spread over four semesters. The Departments of Chemistry, Earth and Climate Science, and Mathematics will offer the Programme in the Academic Year 2022-23, followed in subsequent years by other IISER Departments.

Please find the handbook of MSc Programme here.
