R. Boomi Shankar



Synthetic Inorganic and Materials Chemistry


R. Boomi Shankar obtained his PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology, (IIT) Kanpur, India in the year 2004. He then took up two postdoctoral stints at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, USA and the University of Liverpool, UK. In April 2008, he joined IIT, Guwahati, India as an Assistant Professor in Chemistry. In December 2010, he moved to IISER Pune, India and working currently as a Professor. The research focus of his group falls in the broad interface of structural inorganic and materials chemistry with emphasis on synthesis, structure, physical properties and energy applications.


Inorganic and Materials Chemistry

The research interests of his group is on the chemistry of main group elements, mostly phosphorus and silicon, and their applications in the domain of supramolecular and materials chemistry.
The focus areas of our research activities span over the following major topics.

1. Organic, hybrid organic-inorganic, and metal-organic Ferro- and piezoelectric materials and their utility in mechanical energy harvesting applications
2. Polyhedral Pd(II) based cages supported by tris(imido)phosphate trianions and their applications in host-guest chemistry and chiral separations
3. Multi-functional framework solids derived from silane and cyclic-siloxane scaffolds
