Prof. Satishchandra Ogale selected for 2026 TWAS Award in Physics, Astronomy, and Space Sciences

Prof. Satishchandra B. Ogale, Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Physics at IISER Pune and Director of TCG-CREST, Kolkata, has been selected to receive the  2026 TWAS Award in Physics, Astronomy, and Space Sciences by The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). These prestigious awards are given every two years for outstanding achievements in research and the application of science and technology to sustainable development in the developing world.

On November 14, 2024, TWAS announced a total of 25 awardees in different categories. Prof. Satish Ogale was chosen for the TWAS Award in the category of Physics, Astronomy and Space Sciences along with Prof. Hong Ding from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China. The Award includes a shared prize amount of USD 10,000 along with a plaque. 

The award citation for Prof. Ogale reads as follows:

“For his innovative research in sustainable development, applying advanced functional materials physics to energy harvesting, storage, and conservation.”

In his career span of 45 years, Prof. Satishchandra Ogale has performed research in the field of materials physics covering both fundamental and applied studies. Over the years, he has worked in many fields, including high-temperature superconductivity, colossal magnetoresistance manganites, and multiferroics. The present TWAS recognition is primarily for his innovative research work done in India in the last 15 years on clean and renewable Energy at the National Chemical Laboratory (NCL Pune), IISER Pune, and RISE (TCG-CREST), Kolkata.

During the past 39 years since the inception of the award (previously called the TWAS Prize), 16 highly eminent Indian Physicists have received this exceptional honour. This list of luminaries includes Prof. ECG Sudarshan, Prof. Govind Swaroop (GMRT), Prof. Asoke Sen, Prof. Ajay Sood (currently the Principal Scientific Advisor to PM), Prof. Deepak Dhar (recipient of the Boltzmann Prize), Prof. D. D. Sarma (IISc, Bangalore), Prof. T. Padmanabhan (IUCAA, Pune), Dr. Sandip Trivedi (TIFR). TWAS covers 138 developing countries, including China, India, Brazil, and Taiwan, amongst others.

Prof. Satishchandra Ogale has over 530 research publications in international peer-reviewed journals, 10 US Patents granted based on research done in India, and three books co-edited for Springer, Wiley and Elsevier. He has won several awards and recognitions and is an elected Fellow of the Indian Academy of Science.  He has also worked closely with many industries, including KPIT and Liv Guard in the field of Na-ion and Li-ion batteries. For his work on batteries, he received the “Researcher of the Year” award from the India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) in 2023. He is also a popular science writer.
