PhD program in Science Education Research at IISER Pune
IISER Pune is the first IISER to start a PhD program in Science (and Mathematics) Education Research!
Research in Science Education at the Department of Science Education at IISER Pune encompasses aspects of curricular design, pedagogy, and cognitive and socio-cultural aspects of learning. This is a muti-disciplinary domain of research that draws from various fields including cognitive sciences, educational psychology, design, anthropology, computer science, philosophy and history of science. We are looking for candidates with research interests in this domain. Selected candidates will join the PhD program in the August 2026 semester.
Eligibility Criteria
Students holding one of the following degrees with at least 60% marks (aggregate) are eligible:
- Master’s degree in Science/ Mathematics/ Engineering, including BS/MS, OR
- Four-year Bachelor's degree in Science / Mathematics/ Engineering, OR
- Four-year BSc-BEd, OR
- M.A. (Education) or B.Ed., following a three-year B.Sc. in Science/ Mathematics.
Desirable
In addition to the qualifying degree, we prefer students to have qualified a national examination such as CSIR-UGC NET (education)/ NCERT Doctoral Fellowship/ ICSSR doctoral fellowship, etc., depending on their area of research interest.
Meeting the above-mentioned criteria merely makes the candidate eligible for application. IISER Pune reserves the right to use other / more stringent criteria for the purpose of shortlisting for interviews.
Shortlisting and Interview Process
An online test will be conducted for eligible candidates. We may give more weight to the scores obtained in the descriptive section of the online test to shortlist candidates for the interview. The list of shortlisted candidates will be published on the Institute’s website. Therefore, all candidates are requested to check this page regularly for updates.

Final selection
Final selection to the PhD programme will be based on the performance in the interviews that will be conducted by the Institute.
