PhD Programme

Admissions for PhD programme in Data Science - January 2026

The department of Data Science at IISER Pune is looking for candidates with a good academic track record to join the PhD program starting January 2026. We work at the intersection of statistics and probability, applied mathematics, and computer science. The PhD program will train you in all the three aspects of data science: theory, methods, and applications. You will be part of a collaborative research network extending to other departments at IISER Pune, as well as national and international academic and industry partners.

 

Eligibility criteria

  1. Overall 60% marks in aggregate or an equivalent CGPA on a 10-point scale in Master’s degree or a four-year Bachelor’s Degree like BE, BTech, BS or equivalent in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, or any science / engineering subject. For SC, ST, and Specially abled candidates PD/VH, the requirement is overall 55% or an equivalent CGPA in aggregate,

AND

  1. At least one of the following:
    1. Qualified a national eligibility exam such as CSIR-JRF, UGC-JRF, DBT-JRF-A, DBT-BINC-JRF, JEST, NBHM, GATE, JGEEBILS, etc with a score valid for January 2026
    2. INSPIRE-PhD fellowship (should be in possession of provisional selection letter at the time of Interview).
    3. Applicants must hold either four year Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an Institution of National Importance (INI) with a minimum CGPA of 8.0. List of INIs is available here. (should be in possession of the degree from the INI, e.g., graduated by the time of the submission of the application)

 

Selection process:

Based on application forms received, the above listed criteria, and additional criteria set by the Department, applicants will be shortlisted for interviews. Shortlisted candidates will be selected for admission to the program through a rigorous evaluation process involving two rounds of interviews by a selection committee.  The mere application or shortlisting does not guarantee admission into the PhD programme.
