The PhD programme at IISER Pune is a blend of classroom curriculum and mentoring undergraduate students along with a major research component. IISER Pune admits students to doctoral programmes in Biology, Chemistry, Data Science, Earth and Climate Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, Mathematics, and Physics.

Students with a Master’s degree in Science / Mathematics or a four-year Bachelor's degree with at least 60% marks (aggregate) are encouraged to apply to our PhD programme. In addition to the qualifying degree, we expect the students to have qualified a national examination such as CSIR-UGC NET/GATE/JEST/NBHM/JGEEBILS, etc., depending on their area of research interest. Students will be selected to the PhD programme based on performance in the interviews.

Candidates who hold non-Indian passports, but are Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) and have obtained their qualifying degree ( 10+2 or equivalent, Bachelor's, and Master's) while living (or domiciled) in India can apply through the departmental portals available below.

Please note that the precise application eligibility criterion for each year may vary from department to department and will be announced at the time of intake.

Prime Minister's Research Fellowship (PMRF)

IISER Pune is one of the PMRF granting institutes offering PMRF Fellowship to meritorious PhD candidates. To apply for PMRF through direct entry, the candidate needs to get selected in our regular PhD programme, and the Institute will recommend a selected few candidates for PMRF. The final decision will be taken by the National Level Discipline-Specific Selection Committee. Detailed eligibility criteria are mentioned on the PMRF website and the same will be applicable.

Special Drive for Ph.D. Programme in Biology (Ecology and Evolution) – August 2024


IISER Pune hosts a diverse group of researchers working in various areas.
Research in Biology at IISER Pune currently encompasses both theoretical and
experimental approaches. We are organizing a special drive for admitting PhD
students in the field of Ecology and Evolution. The following faculty would be
participating in this round.

Note: Only those faculty members whose names are given above will accept
students through this round of PhD admissions. Therefore, before applying,
students should check this list carefully to ensure that labs of their interest are
available for admissions in this particular round.

Application criteria:


All candidates who fulfil criteria A1 and any one of the criteria mentioned in
A2, are eligible to apply. Based on the applications received, IISER Pune will
create the list of students to be invited for the online interviews.

Eligibility Criteria:
A1. Masters; (or B.E., B.Tech., M.Tech., MBBS) degree holders in any branch of
science including physics, chemistry, mathematics, biological sciences, ecology
and environmental sciences, biodiversity, psychology or equivalent. Applicants
must have a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate (overall percentage and not
just in majoring subject) or an equivalent CGPA in the General /OBC/EWS
category or minimum 55% marks in aggregate (overall percentage and not just
in majoring subject) or an equivalent CGPA in the SC,ST or PwD category. 

If a candidate has successfully completed a 4-year bachelors degree (e.g., BS,
B.Tech), it is appropriate to indicate in the Masters field,
denoting that the candidate has not pursued a master degree.

Students whose final results in Masters or equivalent are yet to be declared can
also apply. However, if selected, the offer for these students will be provisional,
subject to their fulfilling the above criteria.


A2. Applicants must have any one of the following qualifications.


 Qualified a National Eligibility exam that provides a 5-year Ph.D.
fellowship such as CSIR–JRF / UGC–JRF / DBT–JRF–A / ICMR–JRF /
DBT–BINC–JRF / Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship / Maulana Azad
National Fellowship / National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste Students
by CSIR-UGC / National Fellowship for Higher Education of ST Students /
National Fellowship for OBC Candidates / National Fellowship for persons
with disabilities (NFPWD). The fellowships must be valid on August 01,
2024.


 Qualified JEST* or GPAT or NBHM in the last two years.
 INSPIRE-PhD fellowship (should be in possession of provisional
selection letter at the time of Interview).
 BS-MS/Masters students from any of the Institutes of National Importance
with a CGPA 8 or above on a 10-point scale are exempted from national-
level test eligibility related criteria.
 Qualified GATE exams (GATE Life Sciences, GATE Chemistry, GATE Eco-
Evo, GATE Biotechnology, GATE Mathematics) in. The GATE score must be
valid on August 01, 2024.
 Qualified JGEBILS (IISER Pune will shortlist based on the ranks of the
students).
 For all the national eligibility examinations which provide a common rank
/ score, the cut-off rank / score for shortlisting for the interviews for the
reserved categories shall be lowered to 1.25 times the General category
rank / score.

Ph.D. Programme in Chemistry – August 2024

Applications are invited for admissions to the PhD Programme in Department of Chemistry at IISER Pune in August 2024. Interested candidates with an excellent academic track record who satisfy the eligibility criteria mentioned below are encouraged to apply.

Minimum Eligibility Criteria:

1A. Minimum 60% marks in aggregate (overall percentage; not only in the majoring subject) or an equivalent C.G.P.A on 10-point scale (55% or an equivalent C.G.P.A in aggregate for SC, ST and Specially abled candidates PwD/VH) in Masters' Degree in any branch of Science: Chemistry/ Physics/ Mathematics/ Biology or equivalent.  Candidates with Integrated BS-MS degree/ B.E./ B. Tech./ B. Pharm./ ME/ M. Tech./ M. Pharm. degree satisfying the above criteria of marks can also apply.

If a candidate has successfully completed a 4-year bachelor's degree (e.g., BS, B.Tech), it is appropriate to indicate "Not Applicable" in the Masters field, denoting that the candidate has not pursued a master's degree.

Students whose final results in Master's or equivalent are yet to be declared can also apply. However, if selected, the offer for these students will be provisional, subject to their fulfilling the above criteria at the time of admission.

AND

1B. In addition to the above criteria, the candidate MUST have qualified at least any ONE of the following exams:

(a) National Eligibility Test (NET) with VALID CSIR-JRF/UGC-JRF

(b) CSIR/UGC NET-LS

(e) INSPIRE-PhD fellowship (Should be in possession of INSPIRE Fellowship Provisional)

(f) BS-MS/Masters students from any of the institutes of national importance with a CGPA 8 or above on a 10-point scale are exempted from national-level test eligibility related criteria.

All shortlisted applicants will be further screened based on the ranks/score for their eligibility set by the Institute/Department committee.

Above scores/ranks/fellowships MUST be valid at least till the date of admission to the PhD program 

For all the national eligibility examinations which provide a common rank/score, the cut-off rank/score for the reserved categories to be shortlisted for the interview shall be lowered to 1.25 times the General category rank/score.

Selection Procedure:

Based on application forms received and the above listed criteria, applicants will be further shortlisted for the interview based on additional criteria set by the Department. All the candidates selected for the interview will receive a separate email to appear for the in-person interview. Shortlisted candidates will be selected for admission to the PhD programme through a rigorous evaluation process that includes an interview by a selection committee.

The mere application/shortlisting does not guarantee admission into the PhD programme.

Admissions for the PhD programme in Data Science - August 2024 

For admissions to the PhD Programme in Data Science, interested candidates with a good academic track record satisfying the eligibility criteria below can apply:

Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Minimum 60% marks in aggregate (overall percentage; not only in the majoring subject) or an equivalent C.G.P.A on a 10-point scale (55% or an equivalent C.G.P.A in aggregate for SC, ST, and Specially abled candidates PD/VH) in Master’s degree or a four-year Bachelor’s Degree like B.E., B.Tech, B.S. or equivalent in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, or related branches.

 If a candidate has successfully completed a 4-year bachelor's degree (e.g., BS, B.Tech), it is appropriate to indicate "Not Applicable" in the Masters field, denoting that the candidate has not pursued a master's degree.

AND

  1. In addition to the above, the candidate must have at least one of the following qualifications:

i. Qualified a national eligibility exam such as CSIR-JRF, UGC-JRF, DBT-JRF-A, DBT-BINC-JRF, JEST, NBHM, GATE, JGEEBILS, etc. The corresponding score/selection/award letter must be valid for the August 2024 session.

ii. INSPIRE-PhD fellowship (should be in possession of provisional selection letter at the time of Interview).

iii. BE/BTECH?BS-MS/Masters students from any of the Institutes of National Importance with a CGPA 8 or above on a 10-point scale are exempted from national-level test eligibility related criteria.

The applicant should have a minimum of 60% aggregate marks or CGPA of 6 on of a 10-point scale (55% or equivalent CGPA in aggregate for SC/ST and PD candidates) in their Master’s (MA/MSc/MPhil/BS-MS) Degree, in one or more of the subject which includes Sciences, Anthropology, Archaeology, Cultural Heritage Studies, Economics, English, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Public Administration, Psychology, Sanskrit, Sociology, the Fine arts, and allied disciplines. Applicants from Architecture, Engineering/ Technology, and Medicine are eligible after a Bachelor’s degree (minimum four years).

If a candidate has successfully completed a 4-year bachelor's degree (e.g., BS, B.Tech), it is appropriate to indicate "Not Applicable" in the Masters field, denoting that the candidate has not pursued a master's degree.

Additionally, the candidate MUST have qualified in any ONE of the following exams with any science or humanities/social sciences subject:

  1. National Eligibility Test (NET) with valid* CSIR-JRF / UGC-JRF
  2. CSIR-UGC NET-LS (from examination conducted during the year 2022 and 2023)
  3. NBHM/GATE with a valid* score.

Shortlisted candidates will receive a separate email with the details of the interview that will take place on the IISER Pune campus. Final selection of students will be based on these interviews.

Students with minimum 60% marks in aggregate (overall percentage; not only in majoring subject) or an equivalent C.G.P.A on a 10-point scale (55% or an equivalent C.G.P.A in aggregate for SC, ST and PD candidates) in any Master’s degree or B.E., B. Tech. in related branches satisfying the above criteria of marks can apply. 

If a candidate has successfully completed a 4-year bachelor's degree (e.g., BS, B.Tech), it is appropriate to indicate "Not Applicable" in the Masters field, denoting that the candidate has not pursued a master's degree.

 

Additionally, the candidate MUST satisfy any ONE of the following criteria:

  1. Appeared for NBHM Ph.D. written exam in 2024 and was shortlisted in NBHM Doctoral Interview Shortlist (DIS)
  2. Qualified National Eligibility Test (NET) with valid* CSIR-JRF/UGC-JRF in Mathematics or Computer Science and Applications.
  3. Valid* GATE rank (Rank up to 60 for unreserved category candidates, and up to 75 for reserved category candidates) in Mathematics or Computer Science and Information Technology.
  4. BS-MS/Masters students from any of the Institutes of National Importance with a CGPA 8 or above on a 10-point scale are exempted from national-level test eligibility related criteria.

For all the national eligibility examinations which provide a common rank / score, the cut-off rank / score for shortlisting for the Interviews for the reserved categories shall be lowered to 1.25 times the General category rank / score.

 

Shortlisted applicants will have to clear a two-stage written examination to be held on the IISER Pune campus. Students clearing the written examinations will be called for an online interview. Candidates who clear the NBHM DIS interviews (Feb-March 2024) and hold a valid NBHM scholarship do not have to take the written examination and would be directly invited for the online interview.

 

 

 

Admission to the PhD Programme for the August 2024 Batch 

 

IISER Pune invites online applications for the PhD  program in Physics for the session starting in August 2024.

 

Eligibility Criteria 

The candidate should have a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate (overall percentage; not only in the majoring subject) or a CGPA of 6 on a 10 point scale (55% or equivalent CGPA in aggregate for SC, ST and PwD/VH candidates) in MSc or BTech/BE.

If a candidate has successfully completed a 4-year bachelor's degree (e.g., BS, B.Tech), it is appropriate to indicate "Not Applicable" in the Masters field, denoting that the candidate has not pursued a master's degree.

and 

the candidate should satisfy at least one among the following mandatory criteria:

(a) Qualified National Eligibility Test (NET) with a score in the CSIR-JRF/UGC-JRF category, valid at the time of admissions in August 2024.

OR

(b) Holds a rank equal to 500 or better (625 or better for candidates in the reserved categories) in GATE or JEST PhD Physics. This rank should be valid at the time of admissions in August 2024.

OR

(c) Holds an INSPIRE-PhD fellowship (The candidate should possess a provisional selection letter for PhD fellowship at the time of the interview.)

OR

(d) BS-MS/Masters students from any of the Institutes of National Importance with a CGPA 8 or above on a 10-point scale are exempted from national-level test eligibility related criteria.

 

(Students currently in the final year of the eligible programs are welcome to apply. If  the candidate is shortlisted after the final interview a provisional admission will be offered. The final admission will be subject to the condition that all of the above eligibility criteria are satisfied.)

 

Note that additional criteria, beyond the above eligibility criteria, is likely to be imposed when shortlisting candidates for interview. 



Interview 

Shortlisted candidates will be asked to appear for an interview to be conducted in-person (Dates for the interviews will be announced on the IISER Pune website). The final selection to the program will be based on the candidate's performance in the interview.
