Dr. Siddhesh Kamat, a faculty member in the Department of Biology at IISER Pune, has been awarded the 2024 Infosys Prize in the Life Sciences category. The announcement was made today by the Infosys Science Foundation at an event in Bengaluru.
The award citation to Dr. Kamat reads as follows: The Infosys Prize 2024 in Life Sciences is awarded to Siddhesh Kamat, Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune, for his discoveries concerning bioactive lipids and their receptors, and their metabolic and signaling pathways. His research, using advanced methods to understand the function of lipids, a key component of cells, has important implications for understanding the role of these molecules in a range of cellular functions and human diseases.
The Infosys Science Foundation instituted this Prize in 2009 in six categories to recognise the accomplishments of individuals whose research and scholarship significantly impact India.
Dr. Siddhesh Kamat's research group works on the biological mechanisms of lipid signalling pathways in the mammalian nervous and immune systems. A focus area is to annotate enzymes and receptors that regulate the biology of the lipid signalling pathways and provide new insights and therapeutic paradigms.
